Charge of the ChocoBro Demigryphs!

So over the past few nights I have been painting away on my Demigryphs to get them ready for the CaleyCarnage team tournament in late May (info here: Link) and managed to finish them last night. Really happy with how they have come out and tried to push myself on the blending of the blue. Having seen Byron Orde’s amazing elves at Sheffield I decided I really want to improve this aspect of my painting.

Some of the other parts (feathers, demi flesh and metal) are not quite as good so future models will hopefully improve. Sank quite a few hours into them though but really enjoyed it ( I better! I have 12 more to paint lol), great models and plenty of room to base creatively. Was really spurred on by seeing Steve W’s Empire at Sheffield too, amazing army and made me want to get my empire on the table! The fur was meant to look like a Final Fantasy Chocobo (#Chocobro) but I think I need to work on this. Was aiming for the more modern chocobo and not the super yellow one (pic below for reference).

For those interested the blues were achieved following this method:

For each successive layer I decreased the surface area up to an extreme highlight. All paints were thinned with 2-3 drops of water.

Macarage Blue Basecoat (GW)
Drakenhoff Midnight Blue Wash (GW)
Macarage Blue Layer (GW)
Ulthuan Blue Layer (GW)
50/50 Ulthuan (GW) + Azure Blue (Vallejo)
25/75 Ulthuan (GW) + Azure Blue (Vallejo)
Azure Blue (Vallejo)
50/50 Azure Blue + Ceramite White (GW)
25/75 Azure Blue + Ceramite White (GW)

Let me know what you think guys!

  1. Very nice work. Video could have better resolution, but the pieces are nicely painted. Blue is really great, especially blue armor on horseback.
