Vampire Lord: Test Paint Scheme for the Empire


Hey guys! Very quick post to show some pictures of my test empire colour scheme on a vampire lord model for the ever lovely Greig Summers to use at the Scottish Open. It was a nightmare (pun intended) taking a picture of the barding as it just came up as a luminous pink glow lol! Technically it is one of the better models I have painted but I'm not sure (and neither is twitter!) of the colour choice or mix. So back to the drawing board for another shot! I think I got the blending on the areas pretty good but it took ages and to be honest doesn’t look that great (sad face…). The Sea/Mint Green was particularly tricksy so I think this is a dead end as it will take me a ridiculous length of time to paint an army in these colours!

    I love this model! You did a great job with the technique, its all very clean. Red is just a really hard color to paint!

    One tip to painting red that I stumbled upon a while ago: don't highlight with white, off white, or even grey when painting red. These colors have a tendency to make the model pink. The best color I have found to use to highlight red is by mixing in a little yellow. A touch of yellow in the red applied to the brightest highlights creates a very warm bright color. If at the end it looks too orange to you, you can always dull it down with a glaze of red over the top.

    Also, you can try shading with a 2:2:1 mix of red:green:black (watered down and applied in the darkest areas as a glaze). Doing this combined with highlighting up with yellow creates a pretty severe warm:cool contrast between the highlights:shadows, which makes it really pop.

    Thanks mate will try that out :) Was going for a purple ish pink red so bit of a weird colour mix!
